When it comes to weight loss – I’ve seen it all. And one hormonal imbalance that seems all too common these days is PCOS or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

What is PCOS?

PCOS is essentially a hormone imbalance, which can cause things like unwanted hair growth, irregular periods, ovarian cysts and yup – trouble losing weight!

I’ve had many clients/friends and family members who have had PCOS and who have simply been told by their doctor that they need to just take medication, and reduce carbs and calories for the rest of their lives and call it a day.

But the truth is – the body is capable of incredible healing capability (given the right conditions). And I’ve had the pleasure of working with several clients with this issue and helping them reach their goals both in terms of symptom relief AND the ability to reach their weight loss goals.

I’m THRILLED to say that every client I have ever worked with who has had PCOS was able to lose weight and reach her goal once we figured out what worked for HER body.

‘Scuse me while I put the mandatory disclaimer – of course I need to say – I am NOT a doctor, I do NOT diagnose or treat ANYTHING. You should always check with your doctor before making changes.

I am a Personal Trainer & Nutrition Coach – I am also in training to become a Functional Diagnostic Nutritionist & Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. I help women reach their weight loss goals and bust through plateaus using sustainable methods that WORK.

Often times hormonal imbalances are keeping my clients from reaching their goals – and because I kept noticing this more and more – I became super passionate about helping women improve their health and vitality (& CRUSH THEIR WEIGHT LOSS GOALS), through nutrition & dietary support. Sometimes to get the body on track to weight loss – we’ve got to tackle hormone imbalances first by giving the body the best possible nutrition it needs to regain balance.

Anyways – I digress…

It can be SO frustrating for women when they feel like they are doing ALL THE RIGHT THINGS – but still NOTHING is happening – especially with the scale. Am I right? Not to worry – there IS a solution for YOU – promise! And if you need a little help – feel free to reach out to me here!

What to do if you think you have PCOS?

If you think you might have PCOS I highly recommend chatting with your doctor and asking them to run a full hormone panel (estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, LH, FSH, androgens etc). It also can’t hurt to have them run a full thyroid panel – as some women with PCOS also have hypothyroid . A full thyroid panel includes:

  • TSH
  • Free T4
  • Free T3
  • Reverse T3
  • Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies
  • Thyroglobulin Antibodies

How to eat for PCOS

If your doc confirms that you have PCOS – then I highly recommend checking with her to see if she is OK with you following a high(er) fat, moderate protein, low/moderate carb diet. Of course your diet should be chock full of nutrient dense foods like the ones found in my Guide to Eating For Optimal Fat Loss.

By increasing fats you will help stabilize blood sugar – which will help regulate insulin – this is very important when supporting the body to help balance out hormones. Things may need to be tweaked even further as everyone is really bio-individual and needs something different. I highly recommend working with someone who can help you tweak your nutrition & help you find what works for you.

The deeper I dive into my Holistic Nutrition certifications and apply what I know with my clients – the more I am simply astounded at the power of nutrition & the human body. If you are dealing with hormone imbalances – I want you to know – there IS a solution and your body DOES have the power to heal. It might just need a little extra TLC 🙂

Check out the infographic below which explains a little bit more about PCOS & what you can do to get things moving in the right direction. And remember – no matter how frustrated you feel right now – no matter how much it feels like things just aren’t “working” – there IS an answer !!!! Be the CEO of YOUR health, YOUR goals and YOUR body! Don’t be afraid to seek out experts to help you and to ask for second opinions. Most importantly —  ALWAYS trust your intuition!
